In the development of electronic devices and control systems often need to be aware of the position of the projected system in space (the position of the display to specify portrait or landscape mode, aircraft modeling, etc.), or on the occurrence of abnormal situations in the operation of the system (shock, vibration, etc.). To solve this problem has now become possible using acceleration sensors, which are widely used in recent years. However, their application at an early stage of development is limited to the size of the sensor itself - usually acceleration sensors available in miniature surface mount package (LGA-xx), which makes it impossible to install using common tools (soldering iron).

This module is the sensor LSM303DLH - a board with pre-installed sensor and external components. All control signals and power supply circuits are derived by a standard 9-pin connector with pitch 2.54 mm, which allows easy connection of sensors to an existing system or breadboard. The board has a small size 23mm x 12.7mm.

On board there are two voltage regulators 1.8V and 3V (these voltages are needed for normal operation LSM303DLH) - it allows you to use the board in the voltage range 2.6 V, 5, 5B. Outputs of voltage regulators are connected to extension pins, that allows you to use this voltage to supply external devices with power consumption of up to 150mA. The board also establishes level-shift circuit I2C interface, which shifts the levels of SDA and SCL signals to the voltage level of VIN (voltage at the input of the voltage regulators). This allows you to use a board with 3V and 5V systems without risk of damage the sensor LSM303DLH.

The LSM303DLH is a system-in-package featuring a 3D digital linear acceleration sensor and a 3D digital magnetic sensor. The various sensing elements are manufactured using specialized micromachining processes, while the IC interfaces are realized using a CMOS technology that allows the design of a dedicated circuit which is trimmed to better match the sensing element characteristics. The LSM303DLH has a linear acceleration full-scale of ±2 g / ±4 g / ±8 g and a magnetic field full-scale of ±1.3 / ±1.9 / ±2.5 / ±4.0 / ±4.7 / ±5,6 / ±8.1 gauss, both fully selectable by the user. The LSM303DLH includes an I2C serial bus interface that supports standard mode (100 kHz) and fast mode (400 kHz). The internal self-test capability allows the user to check the functioning of the whole module in the final application. The system can be configured to generate an interrupt signal by inertial wakeup/free-fall events, as well as by the position of the device itself. Thresholds and timing of interrupt generators are programmable on the fly by the end user. Magnetic and accelerometer parts can be enabled or put in power-down mode separately.
